fresher fruit, vegetables and flowers

fresher fruit

21 days kept at room temperature
(purchased from grocery store)

• Fruit will last longer as respiration levels are reduced by removing the ethylene in the air
• Reduction of pigment synthesis and degradation (Chlorophyll) through the process of the ripening hormone found in ethylene
• Spores and bacteria are oxidized due to the powerful action of the potassium permanganate with the pH level of 9.2. Most bacteria cannot survive this level
• Due to the high absorbing components of the granules, it is safe to mix fruit during storage and transport

fresher vegetables

Hass Avocado purchased at a RSA grocery store as "ready to eat"

• Using the Bi-On granules, vegetables will maintain their colour and texture
• Water loss is reduced (undesirable ripening and softening) increasing the shelf-life
• Fungi and bacteria: botrytis, penicillin, etc is oxidized due to the powerful action of the potassium permanganate. The pH level of 9.2 kills most micro-organisms
• Due to the high absorbing components of the granules, it is safe to mix fruit and vegetables during storage and transport

fresher flowers

fresher_flowers

• Respiration levels for flowers are drastically reduced by removing the ethylene gas (ripening hormone)
• "Sleepiness" is a process triggered by ethylene whereby the blooms fail to open in certain flowers (eg. Carnations)
• Bulb flowers (tulips, dahlias and daffodils) suffer from bud necrosis, shoot and root deformities…as part of the negative effect of ethylene
• By removing ethylene, shelf life has effectively been increased through exporting flowers by sea freight

"The benifit of removing ethylene from the cold storage environment of Mangos" by Malcolm Dodd & Samadis
Mangos are very perishable products that require precise management through the post harvest handling and cold supply chain to ensure a high value. Being classified as “Climacteric” fruit, they are very sensitive to the presence of ethylene in the storage environment, and should be managed accordingly. This means that careful handling and attention to detail will ensure that quality maximum value is achieved at the point of sale.
